INFO REDACTION Euro-Parliament takes up the case of Iranian lesbian threatened with expulsion
Brussels 30/08/07, Following a proposal by Italian MEP Giusto Catania (PRC), representing the European United Left/Nordic Green Left (GUE/NGL) Group in the European Parliament during today's Conference of Presidents - and Graham Watson, President of the Parliament's Liberal Group, European Parliament President Hans Gert Pöettering has accepted to write a letter to British Prime Minister Gordon Brown on the fate of Pegah Emambakhsh, the Iranian lesbian woman who risks expulsion from Great Britain to Iran. If deported, Ms Emambakhsh risks physical violence and torture, and without doubt losing her life, because of London's refusal to grant her the status of political refugee on grounds of "sexual discrimination".
"Pöettering has the task of explaining to Gordon Brown that Pegah's expulsion to Iran would constitute a serious violation of human rights and international conventions and bring shame not only on a country like Great Britain but also on the European Union as a whole. I suggested to the President that he indicate Italy's willingness to welcome Pegah, who is not guilty of any crime. We strongly support Pegah and I am sure that all European parliamentarians will continue to follow her case very closely", MEP Catania declared.
The European Parliament Presidency has committed to sending the letter without delay.

Bruxelles, 30/08/07, Su proposta del MEP PRC GUE/NGL Giusto CATANIA (che oggi rappresentava il suo gruppo parlamentare -Sinistra Unitaria Europea- in sede di Conferenza dei Presidenti, appena conclusasi) e del Presidente del Gruppo Liberale, Graham WATSON, si segnala che il Presidente del Parlamento Europeo, Hans Gert Pöettering, ha accettato di scrivere una lettera al Primo Ministro inglese, Gordon Brown, sul caso di Pegah Emambakhsh, la ragazza lesbica iraniana che rischia di essere espulsa dalla Gran Bretagna verso l'Iran -correndo seri rischi di linciaggi e violenze fisiche, certamente anche la morte- perché Londra non vuole riconoscerle lo status di rifugiata politica sulla base della "discriminazione sessuale".
"Pöettering ha il compito di spiegare a Gordon Brown che l'espulsione di Pegah verso l'Iran sarebbe una grave violazione dei diritti umani e delle convenzioni internazionali, una vergogna, non solo per un Paese come la Gran Bretagna, ma per tutta l'Unione Europea. Ho suggerito al Presidente di segnalare la disponibilità dell'Italia ad accogliere Pegah, che non ha nessuna colpa! Siamo vicini a Pegah e sono sicuro che tutto l'Europarlamento continuerà a seguire il suo caso", afferma il MEP Catania.
La Presidenza del Parlamento Europeo si è impegnata ad inviare quanto prima la lettera.
