Update on Hassan in USA (January 14, 08)
Hassan was released per the immigration judge's order to grant our motion to reopen his asylum case. The judges' order was signed on December 19, 2007 and Hassan was ordered released on Friday December 21,2007.
We had an initial hearing last Thursday, January 11, 2008 (this was what was supposed to have happened actually in 1999 but for the client not having received notice from his former counsel). His next hearing date is scheduled for July 2, 2008. This will be the hearing where the judge will hear all evidence related to Hassan's claim of persecution on account of his homosexuality.
Hassan was in my office last week prior to the first hearing and he too wanted to tell you personally how grateful he is for the support and kindness of your association and the hundreds of folks who signed the petition on his behalf. We could not have achieved what we were able to do in this case without the support of your members and readers who signed the petition. I had attached the petition and shown the number of signatures thereon as one further ground for the judge's review in seeking reopening of my client's deportation order.
We appreciate your generous assistance and are grateful that such an organization of your caliber exists to assist those who like my client have not had their voices heard or their stories told. We look forward to working with your organization to finalize the grant of Hassan's asylum application.
